Capita Space Metal Fantasy FK, $349
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“Pretty fun and jibby but way soft when it comes to jumping.”
“This board was so soft! Loved the torsional stiffness, but longitudinally it was almost too soft and wobbly.”
“Holy shit! This board was f*&kin’ amazing! I ride a 142-ish usually making this board pretty huge for me and I still felt right at home on it. That’s a rarity!”
“This board rules. The softest board you’ll ever ride and so fun on rails. Tail can give out a little if you’re sending it, but for rails and overall fun, this board rocks.”
“This is a fun park board, nice and buttery.”
“The most flexible board I’ve ever ridden. Perfect as a rail board.”

“Good weight, flex, and butters.”

Roxy Ollie Pop BTX, $399
Here’s what the tester had to say:
“Extremely responsive for the effort I put into it. I felt I just got maximum response back. Easy turns and smooth sailing on the take offs”
“This board was really, really fun. Good pop and stability while being flexy enough for rails. I felt very comfortable on it and would probably ride it on any terrain.”
“This board was super fun! I took a little more effort to press than I had anticipated, other than that it was awesome!”
“This board was amazing. Floaty for such a little board. It had a bit of rebound, but would prefer a bit more snap”
“Awesome-ly fun. Pops well, turns with ease. Floats in the pow!”

Signal Vita, $329
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“Really soft and sweet for jibbing, but a little soft for big jumps. Good pop though.”
“This was a super fun all-around park board! Steady enough on takeoffs and landings but also really fun on rails.”
“One of my favorite boards in terms of flex. Good all around- jumps, rails, cruising. I like a little softer nose and this board has it. Sweet how wide it is!”
“This board had nice pop and felt solid edge to edge. It could be a little more reactive but other than that, it was great.”

Rossignol Angus Snowboard, $399
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“Has a ton of pop and held an edge really well, loved it as a freeriding board. A little soft for park jumps. It would be really fun in powder.”
“Jumps, yes please!”
“Really stable for a rocker shape. Even at high speeds, this board held a major edge. Pretty stiff but that was awesome for landings. Great all around board.”
“I really liked this board. It had some good stability for all-mountain riding, but was soft enough for good park riding.”

K2 WWW Rocker, $380
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“For a shorter board, it rode really stable as if it were a couple centimeters longer. I looped out on a couple of jumps because of the rocker shape, but rails were really smooth.”
“This board is way soft, especially with the reverse camber.”
“The perfect park board!”
“This board is really fun on both jumps and rails. Soft enough for rails and stiff enough for jump landings.
“Board handled really well and was perfect on jumps.”
“Really good jib board. A little too soft for me, but really fun little jib board.”

Forum Youngblood Chillydog, $399
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“Better than the average park board for sure. Fun on everything.”
“This board was really, really fun to shred park, groomers, and basically everything.”
“The best thing was how the contact points were less hooky than other boards.”
“Super fun park board, great for rails, still good for jumps. Got a little crazy at high speeds but was stable for the most part.”
“This board was really fun on both rails and jumps. Flex was good for pressing rails and stiff enough to land on jumps.”
“Such a good all around board.”

Here’s what the testers had to say:
“This board is amzing! Handles jumps, slays rails, and is super fun on the way to and from the park. 11 out of 10.”
“Fun all around. Rocker enough for rails. Stable enough for Jumps for those about to rack… but this board.
“Best board ever. Great in the slush, whippy turns, presses, jumps, lands. Only problem is that I can’t ride it more.”
“Fun rail board, easy to turn with a good overall flex.”

Gnu Park Pickle, $490
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“The Park pickle will pickle your park in a good way. Sweet combo of stability for jumps and flex for rails. Buy this board and get dirty all year.”
“When going slow the edges take a little getting used to.”"It felt super similar to the Burton Hero, but with better edge hold. Sick pops and really good presses.”
“I definitely hope the rest of the boards this week can live up to my first ride on the Pickle. Perfect mixture of jump and jib, an A+ park deck.”
“This board is ridiculous. The heel edge helps you carve like you were back in the 90’s and it’s soft enough to butter, stiff enough to hit good size jumps.”
“Nothing bad to say. Awesome for pressing, super good for jumping.”
“Super fun, smooth flex. The name says it all!”

ROME Lo-Fi 1985, $450
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“So fun to ollie and play around with. Rides great in the park so I’d say it’s a super versatile all around board.”
“Tons of pop. I don’t like a lot of boards but this one was sweet! Super stable and got tons of THAT AIR.”
“This board was so fricking awesome on jumps!”
“I question if this was a men’s board due to the width. It was surprisingly maneuverable though. I would not recommend this board for crud/bumps.”
“Rides like a bigger board- in an awesome way. The reverse camber makes it easy to jib and press but the board handles jumps. 2 thumbs up!”

Here’s what the testers had to say:
“This board was really fun. It wasn’t super responsive initiating turns, but felt solid once you got going. This would be a good all around board. Fun.”
“This board felt a little too stiff between the binding but I was surprised by how I could still press the nose and tail. It was an overall fun board!”

Roxy Eminence BTX, $540
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“Stable, decent to jump, seems like it would really excel in pipe.”
“This board was really fun. It held an edge well over bumps and the Magnetraction edges just take a little bit getting used to. I’d ride this board for sure.”
“Turns well and it’s really fun for going fast. It’s a stiff for smaller jumps though.”
“This board was so incredibly fast and poppy! I overshot every jump but one! If I got used to its speed and poppiness though, I know I would love it.”
“I felt too locked into my edge while carving, especially on heel side.”
“A super fun all around board. I like it a bunch.”

SASS has got themselves one cool cat working the angles on hill every day. His name is Ben Girardi. Everyone calls him Ben G.
Kid’s got an eye. And better yet, he can rip his board too. On the last day of the session, when the rain had washed all the snow away, Ben pointed it down the dirt, dropped right into a couple hundred vertical feet of dirtin’, for certain. And stuck it, without getting stuck. So, here’s some of his work and yeah keep an eye out for Ben, both on his board and behind the lens. Get at him at bgirardi1@verizon.net if you need a photog. Lib Tech Skate Banana (Women’s), $490
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“So fun! Sometimes it turns a little slow in chatter, but amazing to jib and sweet to jump!”
“This board was really fun in the freshies. It’s really responsive, especially making quick, tight turns, which takes some getting used to.”
“I like this one too! Really fun turning and overall it’s really fun, especially on jumps.”
“This board was awesome both in the park and freeriding. It was a little big for me, but I could still make tight turns through the trees.”
“This board popped with very little effort, but feels liek there’s a lack of rebound when turning if you’re not used to Banana.”
“The most fun board I’ve ever ridden. It pops itself off jumps and feels effortless to ride.”

Here’s what the testers had to say:
“I’m down with this ride, the flex in the tail was perfect for jumps and pipe.”
“This board is way balanced. Not too much of this, not too much of that. A traditional stiffie for the pipe. You can count on it.”
“Very stable. Nice shape, fun ride.”
“Really good all-over board for park and it accelerates through the pipe. Sick!”

Gnu Danny Kass Snowboard, $499
Here’s what the testers had to say:
“This board was surprising. If you didn’t know it had Banana rocker and Magne-traction, you’d think it was a stiff, deep, sidecut carver. Fun everywhere because of the soft rocker. Edge hold surprisingly apt.”
“Riders should know they can size down. I usually ride a 155 and the 153 was perfect.”
“Still my favorite board I have ever ridden. It is there for you whenever for whatever, but plays when you want to have fun.”
“This board is amazing. It’s fun on the way to the pipe and perfect in the pipe. Great shape and flex and flawless edge hold.”
“One of the best boards! So great in the pipe, it just accelerates up the walls.”

Salomon Official Snowboard, $550
Here’s what the tester’s had to say:
“A super fun board and the crazy edges work great through the flatbottom.”
“From the construction, shape and flex this board rode and performed awesome. A really good time!”
“Very stable and fun. Held a great edge and for being a bit softer and more forgiving it still felt good at high speeds in the pipe.”
“Soft, hooky board for fun everywhere. Feels small, but rails up the pipe wall and feels light. Spinnable and lightweight.”
“So fun. I dig this board, one of the best this year.”

So…what’d you get into this winter, gimme the quick run down
Ok… this winter we stopped making Runway Films, I started filming with Standard films. It was sweet..there were some adventures along the way. Our big Alaska trip I was stoked on going was canceled on us …no big deal, just a volcano exploding…ummm…went to High Cascade all summer and then to MGT girls session at SASS here with Dakine and K2 for catalog shoots
Are you bummed to be done with Runway? How’d filming with Standard go?
Ummm… I am bummed that Runway is done because I had so much fun filming with all the girls. Jeff (who I co-produced Runway with) wanted to move onto other projects and so the task of running the entire film crew solo was just too much…and then the whole possibility of not getting the funds while we are in one of the biggest financial crisis’ ever was just another reason to maybe hold off a year.
That doesn’t mean to say that we’ll never make another project. I would like to work on something else, but for now I’m really enjoying focusing on shredding. I spent time at Hood for 4 weeks, just working on learning stuff and it’s been really relaxing for my mind to be able to focus solely on snowboarding. And… the opportunity to film with Standard was a good one so I jumped at the chance. I ended up going on two rail trips to Quebec with them. I share a part with Andrew Geeves. I wish I could have filmed way more with Standard, but some of the major trips that were supposed to happen didn’t.
And then I hurt myself at the US open …my back.
What happened?
I never figured out what it was, I went to the hospital to see if it was broken and it wasn’t. So I spent all summer going to physio and chiro and massage and acupuncture. I just rode this up rail before semi’s and flew to my back onto ice. At first I couldn’t breathe so I thought I broke it.

Harsh…feels better now, though?
Yeah, yeah, its fine, but I still feel it. I guess it must be just muscle. So yeah…I went from US open to Tahoe and hit a big backcountry jump with Mike Hatchett and ended up landing on my back again, like two days after I thought I broke it, so I took it really mellow for the rest of the spring then headed to hood. That’s basically my season.
Was it intimidating filming with Standard, that’s a pretty heavy crew?
Ummm……well my crew in Montreal was Halldor Helgason and Andrew Geeves, and it was our first year for all of us, so it didn’t feel too intimidating. But it definitely made me look at some bigger more intimidating rails. Halldor and Geeves are so sick. My intention was to go out there and get a few rails then focus on pow and park jumps. But I didn’t really get a chance to do that…cuz, there were sponsor commitments to head to things like the X Games.
Is it tough to balance out filming a part with pleasing your sponsors by showing up to contests?
Yeah, it’s just difficult when you head to a contest with no park practice, when everyone else has obviously spent days in the park lapping the jumps. I just feel a bit more rusty heading into something like the X Games from a Montreal rail trip, ya know! I am really stoked though on everything with Standard and my part with Geeves. Stoked to be a part of their crew.

Have you seen any of that movie, Black Winter? How’s it gonna be? Whose got heavy parts?
Yeah, I went up to Squamish and saw it, not all of it, but I saw Torstein, Halldor, Jason Dubois, Andrew Geeves, Lonny Kauk, and ummm…maybe a few others, I forget. Torstein has great variety in his part, he gets stuck in a crazy avy, something you think would never slide and he gets buried. Halldor surprises people with this huuuge jump. Double corks ain’t no big deal…. but am I supposed to even be telling you all this?
Yeah…you got a double cork yet?
Yeah, double cork steam roller.
Do you think the girls will step to the double cork ?
Yeah, I think double backflip first. I’m claiming Colleen Quigley she was doing the rodeo with Tara this summer at camp.
Double rodeo?
Ooh yeah, maybe double backflip 180? Isn’t that what Travis Rice does? I don’t know all the names of these crazy corks.

So where are you at now?
Cerro Catedral, Bariloche ARGENTINA..ole!
How’s the trip been so far? Highlights? Lowlights?
It’s been amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing, aye aye aye! Highlights include getting neck deep pow slashes in the trees. Lowlights are after it downpours for 2 days straight, it gets sunny! And another lowlight…is that you can’t flush your toilet paper down the toilet that’s a weird one. Oh and not being able to flush your food out… if you know what I mean… too much meat! Another highlight is those meat pies, what are they called again?
Empanadas
YEAH! Empanadas! Yeah, so good.
Okay, so this is your first time down here right?
SI!
And what d’ya think? Would you come back? How’s SASS?
Omagah. I AM coming back!!! Next season for sure. This place reminds me of Whistler in a way. The amount of snow that falls every night, so insane. I think what SASS is doing for snowboarding is really great. I mean, it’s an experience of a lifetime for a camper to come to South America. The culture, the food, the siestas, the snowboarding…they make it so easy for us to go to an uncharted territory. I mean for someone who doesn’t speak spanish…it was a nice feeling to know that you’re being taken care of, right from the airport.
So you’d recommend it to other kids. It’s worth the travel and money?
I’d recommend it for sure. For all you kids who want to learn some board control and not just hit rails and park jumps repeatedly, this is the place. You get a chance to shred with the best guides in the world who know their shit. You can build your first backcountry pow jump, hit huge log rides, chutes, cliffs, or just as simple as riding a mellow pow run under the chairlift. It’s an amazing winter experience in the summer.

Flow Snowboarding Partners with NSP
The National Ski Patrol (NSP), founded in 1938, has followed its creed of “Service and Safety” since the establishment of skiing as a popular sport in the United States.
August 2009: Flow Snowboarding signs its first official Co-Marketing agreement with the National Ski Patrol. Flow will be working closely with the NSP to provide a comprehensive snowboard package for patrollers. During the course of the 2008-2009 Winter season Flow’s Marketing Director, Andrew Mutty worked closely with Loon Mountain Patroller Travis Hebron and Northstar Patroller Russ Lindsey introducing the Flow product line and benefits to their staff. “I have always seen the NSP organization as a great partnership,” says Andrew, “and I think we offer a product that speaks the same language as NSP, when patrollers are looking for Speed, Comfort and Performance.” When working with Lead patroller Travis Hebron from Loon Mountain he explained why his crew was so engaged in the product. “They loved the mechanics of it and the ease of getting in and out.” He continued by saying, “I also lent my board to the Lift Ops manager for one run and he went out and bought a pair of Flow’s the next week.” Both groups will represent the co-marketing agreement with links to and from both websites. “Working together with NSP is a goal Flow has set for itself over the past couple of years and now it has finally come to fruition,” says Andrew at Flow, “and we are happy to be involved with the hope of bigger and better NSP/Flow collaborations in the future.”

Caught Up With Torah Bright
by Agatha Wasilewska
Torah Bright is not only incredibly talented, but she is also one of the most down to earth, humble, and happy individuals in the business. At the tender age of 23, she has racked up more titles than one can count and earned accolades such as being a four-time X-Games podium finisher, former and future Olympian, and winner of both the Burton Global Open Series and the TTR World Tour titles- just to name a few. Her fierce competitiveness and merciless drive to push herself and her sport has vaulted women’s snowboarding straight into the big leagues both in and out of the snow world. She has managed to transcend into the realm of fashion and pop culture, gracing more magazine pages and video clips than any other female rider in existence.
Torah was recently in NYC and I had a chance to grab lunch with her and chat her up about the summer, training, surgery and the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympics. As always, she was in great spirits and looking forward to traveling home to Australia this fall, getting back on-snow post surgery, and training for that small event called the Olympics. We talked about her signature series of outerwear with Roxy entitled the Bright Edition and the new looks that are in the pipeline for 2010. Mum’s the word, but there is some great stuff to come from this little powerhouse.
Torah Bright Roosting Pow. Photo: Matt Georges
You recently had shoulder surgery - how has the experience affected you and your outlook on shredding?
The whole experience of the surgery was horrible… I was out for about a week and then slowly got back into the swing of life after that. It was six weeks in the sling and straight into rehab. In a way I feel this surgery was a blessing in disguise. I can’t remember the last time I have had this amount of time off-snow and just being in one spot! So it’s been amazing, getting a taste of normal life. I am looking forward to when I am back on-snow and not having to worry about my shoulder dislocating because it has been a problem for about four years. So, really everything is on the ups!
Are you stoked to get back on-snow post op? Nervous at all?
Nope- not nervous at all! I will just be happy to get back on the hill with a fully functioning body for the first time in years.
 Photo: Matt Georges
Will the surgery and rehab make your training schedule super intense leading up to the Olympics?
No, once I am back on-snow it will be just like any other year… taking a few days just to cruise and feel good on the board again and then get back into learning the things I was working on. I’m pretty excited to get back and work on new tricks!
You and your boyfriend, Jake Welch, both had the same surgery at the same time. How was it being laid up together? Does having someone going through the same rehab process push you to rehab even more?
Being out of commission with Jake was totally bizarre. I would have never imagined that that was how both our winter seasons would have ended. But misery loves company right!? Now with both of us at the rehab stage it is definitely nice to have a partner in crime, makes it a whole lot easier to get through it!
How do you feel this time around going into the 2010 Olympics? Are you less anxious knowing the process?
I’m not any less anxious than the last Olympics, but it is nice just knowing how the entire event works this time around. It’s really all about the experience so I will be going to all the ceremonies and trying to see as many events as I can!! As for being ready for my event, I know what run I want to do and how I would like to do it, so it’s a matter of how things all fall into place on the day of the competition.
You mentioned the insane costume fittings that you had to go through for the ‘06 Olympics. What are some other unique experiences from the Olympics that stick out in your mind?
The drug testing- I was drug tested three times in four days… Crazy!
What are you looking forward to most about the 2010 Olympics?
Just to be apart of it!
- Torah Bright deep in pow. Photo: Matt Georges
I know that you helped design your own line of Roxy gear including your snowboard. Care to share any insider info about what’s to come in the future for ROXY and your line?
Mmm. You’ll have to wait and see.
Have you already dialed in your kit for the Olympics? Do you have any lucky pieces that you always wear for big competitions like this one?
No, I am kinda boring in that sense. No lucky charms.
 Photo: Matt Georges
On the business tip, how has the recent economic downturn affected you or changed the way that you are conducting your career and the choices that you are making for the future?
I was looking at my frequent flyer miles this year and I have not nearly flown as much as previous years. Sponsors are tightening budgets, and so less is spent on travel all across the globe. On a personal tip, I have tightened my belt and am far more aware of where my money is being spent.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when I say:
Peanut butter- creamy or chunky? Creamy.
Coffee order? how do you take it? Don’t drink coffee.
Do you always answer your phone? Haha- no…. not always.
Its four in the morning and you get a text message, who is it? My sister Abi. “What are you doing?”
How many pairs of flip-flops do you own? A few…need more. They’re my favorite.
Ever paid more than $100 for a haircut? Oh yeah. Lucky I got a sister as a hair dresser now!
Last person you talked to? Jake Welch.
Last person you hugged? My sister Rowena.
 Photo: Matt Georges
Do you smile often? Yeah, maybe a bit too much.
Met someone who changed your life? So many!
Favorite…Season? Summer.
Holiday? I’ll take any excuse for a holiday!
Day of the week? Friday and Saturday.
Month? December.
Meal? Dinner.
Late night snack? Cereal.
Drink? Water.

THE SOUND OF PROGRESS.
Los Angeles, CA- Matix Clothing Announces The Launch Of Its First Headphone Collection
Matix Clothing announced today the release of its first line of custom designed headphones. Available in retail stores this October, the new Matix Holiday headphone line revolves around one specific design—The Domepiece (over-ear). The Domepiece is available in three custom detailed color ways—black and gold, white/red,
and a camo/black.

For a traditional clothing brand, branching out into the audio category isn’t typical. However, Matix’s Brian Dunlap says the expansion into headphones was both a natural evolution and an exciting venture. “With the massive increase of sales in cell phones and MP3 players, creating Matix branded headphones just makes sense. We see an open product segment and customer base in need of fashion/lifestyle headphones.” —Brian Dunlap, VP Matix Clothing
In the upcoming months of November and January, Matix will release two new custom designed headphone models—the Bulkhead (on-ear) and the Hangover (in-ear). Matix Pro Torey Pudwill will have a rasta-inspired color way on the Bulkhead model, while Matix Pro Jeron Wilson will have a Diamond X Jeron Wilson collaboration on the Domepiece model. The Hangover meanwhile will focus on unique color ways and prints including glow-in-the dark, woodblock, and tie-dye.
The headphones retail for around $75 dollars and will be available at finer skate shops and boutiques throughout the country.
Come celebrate Vegas Style as we launch The Sound of Progress, headphones by Matix.

After a week plus of shredding and partying at SASS all the campers are starting to get a little beat down. “Crushed” is the term of choice. Hang here long enough and you’ll start to adopt the lingo. And the kids have been crushing it. I use the term kids loosely. This is the 18-and-over session, so technically, we’re all adults, but here at camp it’s easy to feel like a kid again. It’s just play all day.
Here’s a run-down:
7:30—Breakfast is served. You can pick from cereal, eggs, ham, cheese, and fresh croissants. And most importantly the coffee’s good and strong, which really seems to help after only getting 2 hours of sleep.
8-ish—Buses load and start the half-hour drive up the hill. This is the best time to catch a couple extra minutes of sleep. Siestas are crucial for survival here. When you get to the mountain everyone unloads at Tage, a little snack shack that blast Latin beats and fries up the freshest empanadas. It’s a must stop.

9-ish— First chair. But first you gotta figure out which one’s running. Hard to know some days. Not too much consistency on the day-to-day. The Sextuple’s a good option. Seats six and has a bubble. That helped during the last couple days when it was pounding an inch-plus an hour.

12-1-ish—Lunch in “Shopping,” the day-lodge that’s also more or less a mall. The food court serves up all kinds of really good food, and for pretty cheap. Also make time for the mandatory mid-day caffination. Get that Cafe con leche. The Doble (double) will really do it.
2-4 ish—Ride the rest of the day away. Lap the trees. Just try not to disappear in the deepness. It’s deep. Maybe the deepest I’ve ever ridden. But, look out for the bamboo. It’s a bitch to get stuck in. But, that’s just one of the a rites of passage, so don’t stess. If it’s clear, or clearing, get up top. The views from the upper mountain are insane, or so I’ve heard. The sun’s only come out for a couple minutes since I’ve been here, but I caught a glimpse and can only imagine.

5 ish—Back to “shopping” for another coffee, mabye a beer, each only costs a couple bucks. Then head back to Tage, hammer on a couple more empanadas, or papas fritas, pull up a chair and catch up with all the homies about the day. Everyone’s usually got ear-to-ear grins at this point, so even though you’re beat down, excuse me, crushed, everyone’s buzzing. Morale is always high.
5:30 ish—Back on the bus. Catch another nap. Unload at Valle Del Sol, peel off wet gear, make sure you find a heater to put your boots by, lurk around the lodge, watch movies, play pong, eat more empanadas, or dulce de leche, or any of the other postres they put out everyday. It’s maxing out made easy. And probably time for another siesta….

8 ish—Dinners served, then dessert, every night is better than the last, three courses and a room full of friends, all rapping about the day, which just might’ve been the best day of their life. Seems like there’s a lot of those down here at SASS.

Carlsbad, CA—The October issue of TransWorld SNOWboarding magazine (twsnow.com), the world’s #1 snowboard magazine, reveals the 45 winning boards in the eleventh annual Good Wood Board Test. The results are broken down into categories including Top 10 Men’s And Women’s Under $399, Top 10 Men’s And Women’s Over $400, and Top 5 Best Pipe Boards.
“There isn’t a lot of good info available to riders looking to invest in a new snowboard,” said Annie Fast, TransWorld SNOWboarding’s editor-in-chief. “That’s why the Good Wood Test results are so important—we give our readers solid feedback on which boards ride the best, and we offer this info in price ranges available for every rider.”
Over 30 brands sent in a total of 450 boards to be tested last spring in Breckenridge, Colorado’s Park Lane Park, Freeway Superpipe, and the 2,400 vertical feet of all-mountain terrain on Peak 8. The 23 testers scored the boards based on characteristics that define a good board such as turning, flex, high-speed stability; and also those specific to park, pipe, or all-mountain boards.
The October issue features an overview on each winning board, tester comments, and complete tech stats. Readers will be able to use the Good Wood results to find the perfect board whether they’re down for park riding, all-mountain freeriding, or shredding the pipe.

WINDELL’S SUMMER SHRED SEASON COMES TO AN END

It’s happened. The season of summer snowboarding at Windell’s Snowboard Camp is over. The jumps have been plowed, the rails taken out, and the snow is melting furiously without the daily saltings. The saying is true, all good things must come to an end, but to say this summer was merely a good one would be a tragic understatement.
This definitely was the Summer Camp of Terror. Jason costumes, faux neck slashings and giant banners featuring Rome riders being killed by the tools of their craft covered the Windell’s campus. Campers took note and killed it in their own way: by having as much fun as possible every day they spent at camp. On-hill there was slaying going down on the daily as well, with a park full of innovative features that changed weekly, made even more accessible to campers and visiting pros with the new tow rope. Less hiking meant more riding, which is a pretty good trade off. Additionally, Windell’s brought the first ever Bag Jump to Mount Hood. Campers sessioned it all summer and Rome riders Bjorn Leines and Eiki Helgason were stoked on it during their time at camp, dropping some pretty serious stuff and trying some new stuff out.
The brutal theme boiled over during Session Three for Terror Week, when Rome’s Team Terror took over camp. Bjorn Leines, Eiki Helgason, Marius Otterstad, Stale Sandbech and Johnnie Paxson murdered on hill, annihilating the hip, jump line, and halfpipe. Back on campus, they slaughtered the basketball court, paintball course and BOB, where Eiki and Bjorn sessioned the mini-ramp.
The Dream Features this summer all had a prominent skate feel and making the Artifact 1985s with Poprock the most popular boards in the Windell’s Demo Lab. They flew off the shelves with 390 bindings so campers were able to butter and block their way down the mountain every day, every session.
The final session of the summer, Session Seven, was the perfect ender for the year. Saying it was hot, may not be saying enough; shredding in eighty degree sun is something you have to experience for yourself. There was also one of the sickest Dream Features yet; a snake run with hips, a wallride and endless options for gapping and slashing. Campers strapped in and let loose in the creative feature, boosting off the first Jersey-style hip, stalling on the wallride and buttering the gap over the middle hump.
Off hill, Slasher Night was again one of the best nights of the session, with campers scattering over the Windell’s campus as they ran and hid from the marauders. A rumor started during the game that there was a prize for “most bloody” player. Campers covered themselves in red food coloring, hoping to win the exciting, secret, but, non-existent contest. They arrived back at the base hilariously red and were rewarded with the biggest Rome product toss of the summer.
Summer was sunny and sick—make sure to get out to Windell’s next year so you can get in on the shred fun yourself!

All this week, from Monday to Sunday, TransWorld will be bringing you a new clip from Burton’s newest release, The B. For the Burton Team, the 2009 season started just like any other- resort and heli laps from New Zealand to North America and Europe, pipe, park, backcountry, and Stash runs, with riders leaving their mark at every stop. The snow-covered streets of Salt Lake, Minneapolis and sleepy European villages were explored. Corks were doubled and rails were combo’d as waves of winter storms cleaned and set a new slate for mission after successful mission. It was another dream season.
The B is a snowboard film featuring the riding of Jeremy Jones, Jussi Oksanen, Nicolas Müller, Frederik Kalbermatten, Keegan Valaika, and Shaun White with appearances by Danny Davis, Terje Haakonsen, Mason Aguirre, Kevin Pearce, Mads Jonsson, Natasza Zurek, Mikey Rencz, Luke Mitrani, Jack Mitrani, Mark Sollars, Charles Reid, Gabi Viteri, Spencer O’Brien, Mikkel Bang, Sani Alibabic, Marko Grilc, Peetu Piiroinen, Kim Rune Hansen, Stephan Maurer, Chris Sörman, Kazu Kokubo, and Kyle Mack.

While anxious riders in North America sweat out summer in anticipation of the upcoming season, campers, coaches and pro athletes are getting face shots of blower powder in the middle of August. There’s only one place on earth to experience full winter action with such a talented group of people right now: South America Snow Sessions in Argentina.
SASS storms into Cerro Catedral in Bariloche each and every “summer” and takes over the mountain, bringing some of the best riders and skiers in the world to rip through misty tree lines and big backcountry bowls. Session 2 ended with blizzard conditions on the hill; back-to-back storms brought tons of new snow and set up plenty of terrain for all of Session 3.
The lucky campers aren’t the only ones enjoying the fresh pow—our awesome sponsors are taking advantage of being in the SASS family. Last week members of the K2 Snowboard Team paid a visit to grab some catalog photos and get their fill of winter fun. Gretchen Bleiler, Shaun McKay, Robbie Walker and Eero Niemela spent a week riding, shooting and filming all over the mountain. They got some deep turns on the hill and soaked up the local flavor, sampling some of Bariloche’s delicious carne and wild nightlife to go along with their daily shred missions.
As soon as the K2 posse departed for Chile, the Dakine team rolled in with Josh Dirksen, Austin Smith and Leanne Pelosi. Timing is everything and they couldn’t have planned it any better, as the wicked weather turned wonderful and the snow stacked up to Mt. Baker proportions. They’ve been exploring the alleys of the Del Bosque forest and the graffiti-filled streets of town getting some sick shots all week long. And it doesn’t stop there… boardercross teams from around the world are showing up every day to get some early Olympic training in before the competition season begins.
There’s still time to put a little winter in your summer and sign up for the last session of the year, August 29th-Sept 7th. The 18 and up adults only SASS VIP Session is the biggest party of the year and includes free roundtrip domestic airfare from Buenos Aires! $2375 gets you 10 all-inclusive days of lodging, lift tickets, meals, transportation, daily guides into the backcountry, exclusive parties at night, fashion shows and much more. And with the Labor Day Holiday weekend, there’s even more time to play. Go ahead, what are you waiting for?

After a full day of travel I arrived in Buenos Aires Argentina. Everyone here refers to it as BA and I can’t help but think they’re using the ‘ol standby abbreviation for Bad Ass every time. And it is bad ass down here. I got lucky though. It was super low tide up until about a week ago. Dirt in the base area. Rain halfway up the hill. But… then it started dumping, maybe three or four days before I showed up, and kept dumping and everyday is dick deep. Must’ve done something right.

SASS is set up in Bariloche. It’s a smallish town, and apparently the most popular destination for shredding in South America. So there’s mad people on the mountain. Last week was winter break so the resort was clogged with skiers. Seemed liked mostly skiers, but there were a lot of snowboarders in the mix too. Hell bats, all of them. Lots of loose cannons. Lots of looking out. Oh and all the school kids in the area have been out of class for the last six weeks due to the Swine Flu scare. So yeah I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve never seen a mountain with more people.

But, not many of them shred the trees. Not sure why. Maybe it’s all the stumps and fallen snags that threaten to end you. Or the creeks that you can fall in. Or the thick groves of bamboo that could swallow you. It’s a little sketchy in some spots, but sick in others. Everyone’s been comparing the trees to those in Japan. They’re perfectly spread out. The canopy is high. And the limbs are loaded with snow. Stuff of dreams.

And so is this camp. They got it figured out down here. The lodge is hella comfortable, the food is good and served up by waiters in shirts and ties. And all the coaches and guides are here to make it the experiece of a lifetime. So far it has been. Some K2 riders were here at the beginning of the week, and now DaKine is here, so I’ve been rolling around with them, getting into it from first chair to last. Today’s the first down day. It’s pissing rain outside. Word is whiteout up on the hill. Supposed to puke for the next three days. If you have the means to get down here, do. You won’t be let down. More on why, soon……
Or just come on down here and see for yourself. There’s still room in session 4 from Aug. 29 to Sept 7. Come hang for 10 days. It only costs $2375. And it’s worth every penny. Log onto www.sasnow.com or email Travis@sasnow.com he’ll get you dialed.

It’s that time of year again: STYLEWARS 2009
Australia’s premier annual snowboarding festival will shake the foundations of Falls Creek next week in its seventh year running, with tricks stomped by international and local snowboarders, combined with rocking beats that come alive each night.
The four-day festival, which is an integral part of the prestigious TTR (Ticket To Ride) World Snowboard Tour, will kick off on Monday the 24th of August. Heralding an impressive history, `07 Stylewars witnessed the world’s biggest jump ever in competition, measuring a whopping 145 feet from take off to landing and last year saw the icy jaws of the Red Bull gap where if not cleared safely would have resulted in running into a wall of ice and plummeting 3 stories to the flat.
Torstein Horgmo, from Norway, nabbed the title of Stylewars Grandmaster in `07 and had it narrowly stolen from him in `08 by the dark horse Charles Reid from Canada. Reid will be back this year defending his win after 12 months of huge results placing him at the top of the World Ranking list on a number of occasions. However, he has some serious contenders to deal with.
This year, the Stylewars line-up is proud to confirm Sebastien Toutant, from Canada, who made history last week with the first backside double corked 1440 ever mastered in major competition, fast-tracking him to win first place at the Burton NZ Open in Slopestyle. Let’s see if he can match his performance down under once more.
Australian favourites hitting the famous Stylewars course this year are former Stylewars Grandmaster Ryan Tiene of international snowboard film fame, Jye Kearney, the 16 year old with talent as big as his stature, and Nathan Perry and Tim Laidlaw straight off the back of their Quiksilver win at the Mountain Dew Hut Battle for Supremacy.
Wednesday night brings an additional feast for the senses for all Stylewars spectators in the Village Bowl with an under-light Rail Jam consisting of a 28-stair set-up rocking to the beats of DJ Perplex the 3-time Australian DMC DJ champion.
Notorious for nightlife that matches up to performances on the slopes, live music will be hosted each night from Tuesday through to the Friday at Falls Creek’s most popular hangouts, the Man and the Frying Pan.
Featuring top acts including Space Invadas, Koolism, DJ Danialsan, Katalyst, Motley and DJ Perplex, make sure you get organised and book your booty in for some back to back entertainment for four entire days and nights.

Monarch Mountain is a smaller resort compaired to many others in Colorado. At arournd 800 acers of skiable terrain some may frown on this but that includes Mirkwood Basin and much more area accessable by snowcat tours. Monarch receives 360 plus inches of annual snow fall meaning lots of Pow days and never riding fabricated snow. There are four two seater lifts and one quad. Mirkwood Basin which is black and double black terrain is accessable by a fifteen to twenty min hike. For the 08-09 season Monarch had three terrain parks, all of which had nice features but were the only weak point for this resort. I have never waited in line more than a min or two and the runs are which number around 50 not including Mirkwood Basin are never crowded. If you are looking for great pow, no crowds, friendly attmosphere all at reasonable rates Monarch Mountain is the place to be!
